What is the purpose of a Copyright Law?

Article I, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution gave Congress the right to "promote the progress of science and useful arts by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries." This eventually became Title 17 of U.S. Code, better known as Copyright Law. Copyright law is a protection given to creators of "original works of authorship" including literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works.
