- For pterygoid plates, the pterygoid fossa faces posteriorly, and the plates have non-articular, sharp posterior and inferior edges.
- For the greater wing, the smooth, flat orbital surfaces face anteriorly, and the concave temporal surfaces face laterally.
- The endocranial surface is posterosuperior, and its base is marked by the foramina rotunda, ovale, and spinosa. The latter foramen is at the spine of the greater wing, and the most posterolateral extent of the wing, often on the sphenosquamosal suture.
- For a fragmentary lesser wing, the free, nonarticular end is superior, the wing tips face laterally, and parts of the frontal often adhere anteriorly. The anterior clinoid process points posteriorly.
