|
Definition
| italian jesuit. left law career to become jesuit at age of 18. started learning chinese language and mastered it like no before him had. He journeyed to the portugese port of Macao in China and drew up a treatise in Chinese called, "On Friendship." This made more headway in China that anything in some forty years. It was in chinese and it a writing style that was familiar to the Chinese people. Ricci asserted that missionaries to Chinese must immerse themselves in the Chinese culture, they do not need to change themselves. Ricci having this idea made the China ppl more apt to accept Christianity and realize that Ricci did want to impose any european ways of behavior or culture on them. he just wanted to present new ideas, which they were more apt to accept because he adapted it to their language and way of thinking. His value would be ingenuity bc he was the first to make headway in China and think up the certain way of being a missionary. |
