Mixing two pigments like red and yellow to achieve orange means that the red is subtracting yellow from the spectrum and yellow is subtracting red from the white light. The resulting orange color is thus a diminished hue and will never be as intense or vivid as an orange pigment. Subtractive color mixture inevitably dulls the color. This contrasts with additive color mixing. |
